Together, we can - and must - protect our children's education.

I address this letter to every voting parent of a child in the Westerville school district. We often hear the phrase, "preaching to the choir." In this levy issue, we are the choir. It is our children who are affected by the quality of education they receive here in Westerville -- not the people who have no children in their homes or those who do not choose a public education for their children ...

Do I relish the opportunity to pay more in taxes? Of course not. But I do understand that it is the price we pay for a good education for our kids, not to mention protecting the value of our homes. And it is far less than I would pay to put two children in a private school, where there is no guarantee they would receive a better education.

Do I agree with every last decision made by our school district? No. But I understand that no institution can be all things to all people and we have to look at the bigger picture of what they do provide: an education (and) a diploma, that mean something. Our young people graduate with the knowledge and experience they need to enter our best colleges and universities, or to enter directly into the work world. I know this personally, as I am the parent of a Westerville South High School Class of 2000 graduate. As parents, isn't that preparedness what we want for our children?

As for the "no means no" rhetoric -- oh, please. That kind of thinking has no place in reality. If you ask for a raise and your company says no, does that mean you will never again make a dollar more than you are right now? No meant no in May, and yes means yes in November. Let's not extrapolate too much here.

So, Westerville parents, here is the bottom line on the November vote: If every parent of a Westerville student votes yes on Nov. 4, we will pass this levy. Together, we can -- and must -- protect our children's education.
